Puffer Fish

So much for me thinking that the puffer fish we visit is lonely and likes people to visit. After Wendy's comment I looked for some characteristics of puffers online and this is what I found.

Temperament - "In general almost all freshwater puffers are aggressive towards each other and - in the majority of cases - other tank mates. This can be seen in the nipping of fins and in more savage attacks. A puffer bite is easy to recognise as it will be a circular incision. This aggressive nature though may not be initially obvious as when young, puffers are a fairly docile species and only get nastier as they get older.

Due to their nature it is recommended that puffers are kept in a species tank, and even then only one puffer should be kept in the tank."

And then I found this story...

Mad Puffer Fish Attacks Diver

Jupiter, FL

Diving the Hole in the Wall off Jupiter is always an unusual dive. The depth and proximity to the Gulfstream attracts many large pelagic visitors. This day turned stranger when a porcupine puffer fish launched out of a hole and bit my little finger off. (Don't click on this Picture unless your on an empty stomach!) Yes, I said puffer fish. Those cute, cuddly, doe–eyed denizens of the deep apparently have quite a temper and a vicious set of teeth.

After leading a group through the cavern called the hole in the wall, we traveled down the wall at a depth of 130’. In my peripheral, I saw an 18” long puffer fish neatly tucked into a lobster looking hole. I stopped the group so everyone could ooh and aah over the pretty fish. I first touched the fish on the head to get him to come out of the hole. Since the area is known to be a regular hangout for Bull sharks, this guy was not budging. Sharks like to eat blowfish. Persistently, I waggled my hand in front of his face acting like food (Ed. note: Don't pretend to be food). My hope was to entice him to come out and play. That is when he launched forward and got hold of my pinkie. Playtime over! Man that hurt. This cute little fish has teeth like a parrotfish and the ability to crush shells if necessary. He bit my kevlar gloved hand like a piranha on a dining mission. When he was ready, he let go. I was in pain, but relieved that my glove wasn’t cut. When I took my glove off, I realized half of my finger was still in the glove. The stump that extended from my hand was clouding the water with green smoke. It was so thick I couldn’t see my hand. I grabbed the base of my finger to attempt to stop the blood cloud and was shocked to see the damage inflicted.

The guffaws at the emergency room were endless. “A puffer fish?” everyone asked. They were unable to reattach the digit due to the crushing effect of the teeth on the glove. I will go to a plastic surgeon next week to get a skin graft or” flap over” as they called it. I am considering having a small Captain Hook style attachment but decided I would probably poke my eye out before I got used to it. With a generous supply of painkillers, I am restricted to shop duties. I am however humiliated by the weak reputation of the attacker.

The other comment I got from divers was” I never knew puffers could bite. I didn’t even think they had teeth. “ Yes they can and do. Please be officially advised: Do not mess with the animals; they will defend themselves.

In my thirty years of diving, I am sorry to say I have touched the fishes. I have even captured a puffer to let it blow up for the crowd. I realized several years ago it is not nice to blow up the puffers and all the wildlife should be left to it’s natural self. In my time I have swam with sharks on numerous occasions and had Green morays swim into my BC looking for a treat. Just last week I had a Goliath Grouper fight me over a cobia I speared too close to his territory. I never imagined I would have to tell my grandchildren I lost my finger to a puffer. Instead I will tell them I discovered a new species of deep-water puffer fishes. Just like their porcupine cousins, they are cuddly but have teeth half the length of their torso and can bite through a shark in a single lunge. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

High School Students

Today I was responsible for escorting 19 high acheiving high school students around to some of our Science programs.

The greenhouse area.

In the picture above you can see our aligator and turtle.

Above is a picture in the outside area where native California plants are on display.

This blowfish is in the aquatic area. I've been on the tour four times now. Every time people stop by, the fish hangs out next to the glass and seems excited to see people. It will follow anyone who is near the glass. Poor thing seems kind of lonely and very social.

Hi Piggy!

The Missing Key

Last week I called Audi to find out how much it would cost to get a new key since I lost mine while we were out riding. They told me it would be $250. Do you see the numbers I just typed? Two hundred and fifty freaking dollars. I was not happy.

On Sunday we went back to the same trail and looked for the key as we rode. We found it! I can't believe that I actually found the key. I was so excited.

We also saw another coyote. This time it didn't want to get off the trail as we rode by. If we'd remembered to get the camera, it would have been a great picture. We also saw a bobcat. It was another nature filled ride.

Bike Ride

Yesterday I went on a very interesting bike ride. It would have been a good ride, except that when I got back to the car, I realized that I had dropped my vehicle key/alarm.

About a quarter of the way into the ride, Jake needed to adjust his seat, so I opened my pouch to give him some tools. He decided to keep the tools in his pouch and I forgot to zip mine up again. I don't even want to think about how much it's going to cost for a replacement. Thank goodness Jake had a spare key for my car. We had taken two separate cars and he had my spare in his car (we had both taken our own keys). It was actually a lucky situation; we could have had only one car with a missing key, or we could have locked his key in my car before riding and ended up with no way to open the vehicles. Either way though, it was still annoying.

But on the upside, I got within 5 feet of a coyote before it slunk into the bushes as we rode by. It was amazing that it wasn't really afraid and didn't seem to care about us. It seemed more like a dog, but it was very cool to get so close - at least until I thought about it's pack coming after us in mass.

Also, we saw a fantastic tarantula on the trail. When we stopped to rest we saw him walking along. He was probably about 7 inches long and was absolutely beautiful, walking slowly along while we observed within inches of his fuzzy body. I think I'll start bringing my phone with me so that I can take pictures next time. Of course, I'll have to be very careful not to drop it like I did with my key. :(

Twin Test

I just purchased a twin zygosity test. Wendy and I were told at birth that we are fraternal twins, but over the course of our lives, we have had many people look at us and say that they think we look too much alike to be fraternal. I have a few friends that insist that we must be identical. So, after 30 years I've decided to finally find out for certain.

For those who might not know, fraternal twins come from two separate eggs and two separate sperm. Fraternal twins are supposed to look as much alike as any two sisters or brothers. Identical twins on the other hand come from the same egg and sperm, which once fertalized, splits in two. Identical twins are supposed to look very much the same.

So it seems to me that we are likely two fraternal twins who happen to look more like each other than the usual set of twins. But there is also the possibility that the doctor was mistaken and we are actually identical, and some might say, look less alike than you might expect from identical twins.

And so I anxiously await the next time we see each other, so that I can swab Wendy's cheek and lay the controversy to rest. I have to admit I'm hoping that we will be told that we were given incorrect information and that we are actually identical twins. I'll let everyone know as soon as we find out.

Update

Here is an update on some things that have happened lately.

First, last Friday I closed escrow for the house that my Dad sold to his brother-in-law. This brings me closer to finishing the entire deal. We still have awhile before we close escrow on the house that my father is buying, but it still feels good.

Second, on Saturday Jake and I went mountain biking. It had been about three years since we had last ridden and I was very excited to get started again. We had our bikes tuned up yesterday and we're going out again tomorrow. It's fun and great exercise.

Third, I bought a laptop yesterday. I finally, for the first time ever, have my own personal laptop. It's all mine. No sharing with Jake, no more getting in trouble whenever anything goes wrong on his computer. We no longer share. Yeah!

Bye Micah

These were taken on Sunday right before I left Wendy and Jeff's house. I miss Micah already. :(

Friends

We also got to see Xavier, Ted, Cameron, and Karen while we were in San Jose. I miss everyone. Maybe I should move North?

Family Feud?

One of Jake's brothers applied for the Family Feud, so we had the whole group of brothers stay at our house last week for try outs. They got a letter back saying that they're now eligible, but they still have to wait to see if they will definitely be going on the show. I think it will be pretty funny if they actually go on.

From left to right it's Jake, Andy, Jeremiah, Chuck, and Josh.

Wow, I feel like a real agent.

Mailbox

A few days after someone destroyed our fence, our mailbox was broken. I think someone ran into it. Frustrating.
