Target's Return Policy - It CAN Get Worse!

I hope everyone remembers my previous post regarding Target's crappy return policy - you can't return anything more than $20 and you can only return items twice a year without a receipt.

At the Target by my house they let me complete two returns up to $20.

Today I decided to get a few more things returned so I called up my dad and asked him to go with me to Target. But this time I went to the one by his house. I won't get too much into my experience, but by the end of the fiasco I found that the Target in Fullerton will only let you return two ITEMS under $20 twice a year. So at the end of that experience I finally told them to void the transaction that Dad was helping me with and I dragged him over to the Target by my house where they still let us return more items per transaction.

I really couldn't believe it could get any worse, but there it is, it actually can. Can you imagine needing to return items from a baby shower and only being able to return two items per person?! There's no way! I am so upset with Target right now. No one should EVER register there. I'm definitely warning people away from them in the future.

I agree. It is unfortunate because I usually LOVE them. Now I want to boycott but I like them too much. Dang it.

I'm not sure what goofball thought this new policy up, but it is NOT customer service focused AT ALL! You should post on the consumerist, they LOVE this type of stuff.

Hopefully enough people will complain, or business will be lost that they will rethink this new return policy. I mean, I won't ever register there for anything...and I will recommend Babiesrus to everyone I know.

You can return things if you have a RECEIPT and Target gives you a GIFT RECEIPT.

If the gift giver did not give you a receipt than they are probably offended you would want to take their gift back to a store.

Regardless of that, it is not Target's responsiblity to give refunds for things that they do not know were bought at their store nor at what price they were paid. Theft is a HUGE issue and the simple responsiblity of taking the receipt or gift receipt in is a very little burdon to you.

If all else fails, give the gift as a gift to someone else or donate it to charity.

I see that anonymous above is too much of a coward to give me their real name. Too bad we can't have a real back and forth about this. I wonder if they even bothered to read my earlier post about this subject. By the way, they should check their spelling in the future so they don't look like an idiot while posting on other people's blogs.

I too have had problems with Target's return policy.

It irritates me that if you buy something in the store and then try to exchange it, you can only exchange for something in the same department.

They give you a hard time even for receipt-returns: I bought a laptop bag and found it to be too heavy-weight to carry. I brought it back THE SAME DAY with the tags and my receipt and they WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO EXCHANGE THE ITEM FOR SOMETHING FROM ANOTHER DEPARTMENT.

I don't understand this reasoning: it's MY money. I HAD a receipt. I was not satisfied with the product and wanted another one. Target should put up a HUGE sign in the front of the store that says "Warning: Don't part with your money unless you're absolutely SURE because once you bought it, you're keeping it, honey."

But the incident that made me REALLY angry was the time I bought a DEFECTIVE Gillian O'Malley bra from them.

I bought the item, took it home and attempted to wear it. The item was an irregular for sure. The cup-size was off (none of the other bras I bought in the same size matched) and one of the seams was poorly sewn and began to unravel immediately.

I brought the item back WITH my receipt (Gillian O'Malley is Target's own brand so there shouldn't have been a problem, anyway) and they refused to exchange the item for a non-defective one.

So I wrote corporate a letter. In ANY OTHER RETAIL STORE if you can't come to an understanding with the sales associate, writing to corporate works.
The corporate office basically told me to "suck it" as well. Instead of seeing my point of view and making a reasonable exception for a reasonable, righteous purpose, they defended their return policy--insisting that them's the rules and tough cookies if you got screwed.

So then we are left with one conclusion: The purpose of Target's return-policy is NOT simply to protect themselves from fraud by eschewing unreasonable returns, but rather: to create an arbitrary set of corporate "rules" to exempt themselves from any merchant accountability.

The name of this game is "buyer beware" because they are not looking to be FAIR, they are looking to keep the money (come hell or high water) of anyone who has the misfortune or poor judgment to hand over payment to the cashier--once you've parted with it, you're not getting it back..logic and reason be damned!

Yes. Boycott Target. Don't register there, don't allow people to buy you gifts or gift cards from there. If you're having a wedding or baby shower, be sure to make note in the invitations or via email that your guests should not purchase there unless they are 100% aware that once they've paid, it's permanent.

Thank you for blogging this. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one.

Target's return policy is synonymous with theft. They won't even do an even exchange for their own Target products. Beware of being given a gift card to do your exchange. It may be for up to 33% less than what you paid for the item. That is theft to me. Why should I pay them to exchange their product.

DO NOT buy anything of any value at Target. If there is a problem you will be out of luck and they DON'T care.

Pretty simple return policy and it's posted on EVERY receipt. Target Stores Return & Refund Policy

A receipt dated within 90 days is REQUIRED for all returns and exchanges.

All returns and exchanges must be new, unused, and contain all original packaging and accessories. A form of personal identification may be required. Some items cannot be returned if opened, including music, movies, video games, software and collectibles. Other restrictions may apply.

Don't have your receipt?

In most instances, Target stores can verify purchases made within the last 90 days on a credit/debit card, check or GiftCard using our Receipt Look-up system.

If your return was part of a gift registry, please visit our Gift Registry Return Policy.

All other returns or exchanges, including those without a receipt, will be offered manufacturers’ warranty and repair assistance at 1-800-303-0308.

Store refunds will be issued in the same form of payment originally used for purchase:

Credit Card Purchases: Your refund will be credited to the original credit card.

Target GiftCard Purchases: Your refund will be issued in the form of a Target GiftCard good for purchases made at Target stores and on Target.com.

Gift Recipients: If your return is made with a gift receipt, your refund will be issued as a Target GiftCard good for purchases made at Target stores and on Target.com.

Checks: Your refund may be issued in the form of Target GiftCard good for purchases made at Target stores and on Target.com.

Restocking Fees: Some items are subject to a 15% restocking fee, including camcorders, digital cameras, portable DVD players and portable electronics.

Tax: The appropriate tax amount by item will be included with your refund.

Discounts and Promotions: The refunded value for each item returned will be reduced to reflect the value of any free gift or discount.

Holiday and Seasonal Merchandise Refunds: Holiday and seasonal merchandise on clearance at the time of return will be refunded at the current clearance price.

Other restrictions may apply.

Just to add a little more information
Also Target will let guests do no receipt returns up to $70 per year with a valid ID. There is no longer a limit on the amount of no receipt returns, just limited to $70 since no receipt returns are an EXCEPTION and don't HAVE to be honored based on the POSTED return policy.
